Decision matrix

I chose the hexagon design because it was something both my partner and I agreed on, and it ranked best on the decision matrix. The criteria I based the matrix off of was its ability to allow a hinge, if it could easily fit the earbuds, if it would fit in a pocket or purse, if it had vent holes, and if it would be protected in a pocket or purse. Out of all the designs, the hexagon graded best. Also, my partner and I were able to combine both our initial designs on something we both agreed, which happened to be the hexagon design.

The bottom piece came out how it was design to, but I think there couldve been some areas for improvement. I think to better fit the criteria, it couldve been smaller so the case could easily fit in a pocket. Also, I believe the hinge shouldve been made differently, in a way is sturdier and easily maneuverable. But, the top piece, fit well, and the hinges work, so overall the design I am satisfied with the design.
Evaluate solution
Our design tends to all the criteria and constraints. The case is composed of to components, connected by a hinge. It’s easy to put the earbuds inside in under 7 seconds. The case also can protect the earbuds from being damaged, along with allowing ventilation holes and it easily fits in a pocket. These are all of the criteria, which the design meets. Our design also fits the constraints, because the design and 3d printed prototype have been submitted before the due date.
Present solution
The first type of model I used was concept sketch. It’s purpose is to get down any ideas you brainstormed and liked enough to sketch. It’s limitations would be final measurements and you only get to see one view. I used this model so i could sketch out my ideas to get an idea of what I liked best. The second model i used was a multi view sketch. It’s purpose is to get all the dimensions of the shape and to be able to look at all the views at once. It’s limitations would be the fact that its not 3d, and you cant hold it, you can only go by the measurements. I used this in this situation so that I could have all the dimensions down and have a look at all the views. The next model I used was a 3d CAD mockup. The purpose for it would be to have an exact replica of what is going to be printed. Its only limitation would be the fact that you cant hold it, and you dont know how well it will print, only what its supposed to look like. I used this model so I could see what the model was going to look like before I actually printed it. The last model I used, would be a 3d printed prototype. It’s purpose would be to have a real life version of the design so you can see how it functions. It’s limitations would be that you cant go back and change anything once its printed without changing the 3d mockup. I used it so that I could have a real life protective case so I could see how well things actually work when actually printed.
I met my goals to 3d print a case that protects the earbuds and has a working hinge. This is because by the end of the project, the lid was able to open and close, and the earbuds are able to fit safely into the case.
Previous experiences in this class helped me to figure out how to create a successful design that met the criteria. I was able to come up with measurements that would work based off the first time I 3d printed a design. Also, based off of previous design portfolios I’ve done, Ive learned what I need to add, what I dont need.
