Design brief
COncept sketches
This is my initial design. The purpose for this would be to generate some ideas that I could use for my project. The limitations to this would be that there are no measurements, and its only one 2d view of my figure. My justification in using this would be that I needed to come up with some ideas, so sketching them down on paper would help me pick the best solution to the problem.
DeCision matrix
I chose the design of the PS4 because it ranked highest on the decision matrix. The criteria I graded it on was its ability to attach to a bag, whether it was personable, if it was easy to make, and if it had a hole for a keychain. Out of all the ideas, the PS4 design had the highest total score, hence why I chose the design.
This is an isometric model of my design. It’s purpose is to show the overall dimensions of the shape and to show the front, side, and top view of the design. A few limitations to this model would be the hidden lines, and the bottom, side, and back view. It also doesn’t give the measurements for specific parts of the shape, it only gives the overall dimensions. My justifications for using this model would be to get a good idea of my final idea, so I can move onto creating a 3d mockup with shape and dimensions.
This is a 3d mockup of my design. It’s purpose is to show what it would look like if it was printed. You can see all the sides, and you also have all the properties including volume, mass, length, depth, and width. The limitations it has would be that you dont have the hidden lines, you dont have the annotated dimensions, and dimensions you can only see what view your facing. I used a 3d cad mockup to finalize my design and see it in 3d so I could make any changes to it if needed.
This is a multi view sketch of my design. It’s purpose is to show you all measurements, hidden lines, and faces of the shape. With this I can see things that wouldnt be visible to the naked eye by looking at the hidden lines, center lines, cut away lines, and more. The limitations of this model would be that you cant rotate the figure like you can in a 3d cad mockup. My justification for using the multi view sketch would be so that I can view all angles at the same time and have the dimensions annotated on the figure.
This is a prototype model of my design. It’s purpose is to produce a real, working version of your design. The limitations of this would be that I cant make any more changes to the model itself, I would have to go back and redesign it in fusion 360 and reprint. My justification for using a prototype model would be so that I could have a working model of my design so I can see how it attaches the keychain.
I like the results of my project, and I wouldn’t change much of anything if I went back to change it. The size was good, along with the weight and shape. It 3D printed well and the structure was stable. Although for painting it, I might have wanted to sand it first, or just paint it black instead of painting it white first. I might also try to add more detailing in cad instead of painting the stripe and symbol on, although the original PS4 console doesn’t have much detail other then what I added.
My design aligns with the design statement because the charm can easily attach to a bag and is personalized to my partner’s interests. My design fits into all the criteria and constraint because it allows a keychain to attach to it, there’s at least a 0.25 in difference between the edge of the design and the circle. It attaches easily to a bag, and fits into the size constraints. The customer was satisfied with the product, and I wouldn’t change anything about my use of time or materials.
I learned that it is far to expensive and time consuming to come up with an individual design for each different customer. You would have to charge over the cost to make the keychain to make a profit, which for a luggage tag would be considered overpriced. So, it would be easier for a company to not spend time coming up with sketches, designs, and new ideas for every keychain, rather then using the same design for each keychain and maybe just changing a name or something of the sort.
